Why character limits shape what people actually read
Every platform cuts your text somewhere — and the cut usually happens much earlier than the official limit. Instagram allows 2,200 characters, but only about 125 show before "…more". YouTube titles allow 100 characters, but search results trim them near 70. This counter shows both the hard limits and the practical ones, so you write for what people really see.
The limits that matter most
- Instagram caption — 2,200 max, ~125 visible before "more". Put the hook in line one.
- Instagram bio — 150 characters. Every word earns its place.
- TikTok caption — 2,200 characters, including hashtags. Short still wins for scannability.
- X / Twitter post — 280 characters for standard accounts.
- YouTube title — 100 max, keep under ~70 so search doesn't truncate it.
- YouTube description — 5,000 characters; the first ~150 act as your search snippet.
Writing to the visible limit
Think of the visible portion as your headline and everything after it as the article. Front-load the payoff — the question, the number, the bold claim — and use the hidden portion for detail, context and hashtags. If a sentence gets cut mid-thought at the fold, rewrite it so the cut lands after a complete idea; captions that end the visible part on a cliffhanger ("here's what nobody tells you…") earn the tap on "more".
What counts as a character?
Spaces count. Line breaks count. Hashtags count. Most emojis count as two characters on platforms that measure in UTF-16 units, and some complex emojis (family or flag emojis) count as more. If you're one emoji over a limit, that's usually why — this counter measures the same way the platforms do, so what fits here fits there.
FAQ
It counts characters, words and lines live as you type, and shows how your text fits platform limits like Instagram captions, bios, X posts, YouTube titles and meta descriptions.
Text that exceeds a platform's limit gets cut off — in captions, titles or search results. Staying inside the limit keeps your message fully visible.
Yes. Spaces count as characters on every platform, and emojis often count as 2 characters — the counter reflects what platforms actually measure.
No. Everything runs in your browser — nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
Instagram: 2,200-char captions, 150-char bio. TikTok: 2,200 captions, 80 bio. X: 280. YouTube: 100-char titles (60 visible in search), 5,000 descriptions. Google shows ~60 chars of a title tag and ~160 of a meta description.
Line breaks and emojis count more than they look — some emojis count as 2 characters, and platforms trim trailing whitespace differently. Keep 5–10 characters of buffer under any hard limit.
