COMPETITOR RESEARCH STRATEGY

Find the gap. Build something better.

Competitor research works when it helps you prioritize original improvements. It fails when every difference is treated as a weakness or every missing term becomes a page.

Start with evidence quality

Separate three different things: a confirmed mechanical failure, a manual-review signal, and a topic difference. These are not interchangeable. A confirmed failure can justify a technical fix. A review signal needs human verification. A topic difference is only a research candidate until relevance, intent and demand are validated.

Confirmed failureA sampled pass/fail check failed. This can be prioritized as a real implementation problem within the audit scope.
Needs reviewThe crawler found something that deserves inspection, but it is not evidence that the page or competitor is weak.
Research gapA filtered title/heading topic appears on the competitor sample but not your sample. Validate it before building content.
DifferentiatorA topic visible on your sample but not theirs. Treat it as a possible positioning advantage, not proof of better ranking.

A safer Fix → Verify → Build → Measure sequence

  1. Fix confirmed crawl and technical failures on your own important pages.
  2. Manually verify review items before changing anything.
  3. Improve existing high-value landing pages before publishing more URLs.
  4. Research competitor topic gaps for real audience relevance and intent.
  5. Create original coverage with stronger examples, trust, UX and internal links.
  6. Measure impressions, clicks and conversions in Search Console and analytics.
Do not use competitor research as a copying shortcut.

A strong opportunity is a user need you can solve better, not a sentence, heading structure or page template you can duplicate.

How to connect the research to traffic

SEO, AEO and GEO improvements

For SEO, strengthen crawlability, internal links, page purpose and original topical coverage. For AEO, use clear definitions, answer blocks, steps and FAQs where they help the user. For GEO, improve entity clarity, first-hand examples, citations, author/trust signals and original data or visuals that an AI system can reference with confidence.

Monthly competitor-review cadence

Review competitors monthly or quarterly, not every day. Track your own winners first. A useful cadence is to re-check a small set of direct competitors, inspect one or two category leaders, refresh winning pages, validate new topic gaps, and document which changes actually improved impressions, clicks or conversions.
